We are proud to release a new feature today: MaraDocs Image Enhance.

We have finally implemented a feature that I originally wanted to include in the very first version of MaraDocs.

You know it from many scanner apps on your phone: the exposure and contrast of a photographed document are improved after the fact. Paper should (usually) be white, not gray or tinted blue. But in day-to-day law firm work, we constantly receive photos from clients — not PDFs, not scans, no scanner apps. One of our customers called this type of client submission a digital pile of rubble... very fitting.

MaraDocs Image Enhance in Action

The following image shows a typical document that you might receive from a client. Here, of course, without any sensitive information. In the first step, MaraDocs detected the document in the image, precisely cropped it, corrected the perspective distortion, and straightened it according to the text direction. And now — automatically, of course — MaraDocs Image Enhance comes into play as a new feature, improving the visual quality of the document: contrasts are increased and the document background becomes significantly whiter.

Significant Improvement in Readability

MaraDocs automatically detects gray or shadowy areas in the image and improves them without distorting the content. The result is a significantly improved readability of the document — both for humans and for text recognition. We have observed that text recognition is noticeably improved on particularly poorly exposed images.

MaraDocs Document Optimization is Optionally Toggleable

We have enabled the new Image Enhance function by default — but only when MaraDocs has found a document that it was able to crop. For "full images," we do not apply the function. We assume that "full images" may often be photos showing real situations (e.g., images from an accident scene). We naturally do not want to alter those.

Using the sun icon below the cropped result (on the Optimize page), you can disable the function per result and, of course, re-enable it.

Image Enhance is Available in the MaraDocs API

We have also made the new feature available in the MaraDocs API. With the v1/img/improveContrast endpoint, you can improve the visual quality of images. The endpoint is currently still marked as experimental. However, we are already using it in our own application.

MaraDocs is Continuously Evolving

I am delighted that with today's update, we were finally able to roll out MaraDocs Image Enhance. Almost a year after the first MaraDocs release, a feature that we had planned from the very first minute has now landed in MaraDocs.
